Workshop: Good Scientific Practice


Aims of the course "Good Scientific Practice" are to know and understand the basic rules and values of the responsible conduct of research and to recognize questionable scientific practice and misconduct. The participants will learn to develop appropriate solutions for difficult situations in the process of science and learn how to act appropriately. They are encouraged to speak about mistakes and problems.

The content of the course follows the curriculum "Good scientific practice" which was commissioned by and developed in cooperation with the German Ombudsman für die Wissenschaft.

  • Definitions of good scientific practice and scientific misconduct
  • Degrees and extent of scientific misconduct
  • Examples for responsible and irresponsible conduct of research
  • Areas of science which are prone to conflict
  • Data management
  • Authorship and the process of publication
  • Mentoring
  • Conflict management: how to deal with scientific misconduct
  • Reactions to scientific misconduct

The course encourages the active involvement of the participants and features the following didactic elements: case discussions, problem based learning in small groups, plenary discussions, information input.

The registration is on a first come, first served basis. The registration fee will be payed by the graduate school the PhD student belongs to. In case of a cancellation of participation less than 7 days prior to the start of the course a cancellation fee in the amount of 100 % (165,48 EUR) of the registration fee will be charged unless a medical note is submitted!
